Coppervale is Lassen Community College’s ski hill on Highway 36, 18 miles west of Susanville, with about 740 feet of vertical from its 5,200-foot base. Skiers from Westwood and Susanville started it as a club in the late 1930s, with a rope tow run off the rear wheels of a car chained at the top; the college took it over and taught its first ski classes here. A Poma lift, installed in 1977, now runs to the summit, serving eight trails through the forest, a face and a bowl, plus a terrain park and half-pipe. It opens Saturdays, Sundays and holidays when the snow allows, with full and half-day tickets and rental gear.
