On the slopes of the old Hidden Valley ski area in Vernon, in northern New Jersey, the National Winter Activity Center reopened in 2016 as a nonprofit facility only for young people. Adults don’t ski here: the hill is given over to Winter4Kids lessons, race training and scholarship programs that bring children from across the state onto snow, many for the first time.
