In Nanshan, in the Tianshan Mountains about an hour from Urumqi, Silk Road resort opened in 2014 and quickly became one of Xinjiang’s leading ski areas. Gondolas and chairlifts reach intermediate and expert terrain, and short, steep gondola runs give it a reputation for some of China’s toughest skiing.
