Founded in 1965 by the Nelson brothers and still in the family, Welch Village sits in the Cannon River valley near Red Wing, southeast of the Twin Cities. Its bluffs pack a surprising share of black runs alongside gentler trails, and since 1975 it has hosted the Welch Village Invitational, the largest high school alpine race in the country.
